HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY

India was declared a Republic on 26 January 1950. So, January 26 is known as the Republic Day of India. The power of government passed into the hands of the common people. All castes creeds and religions were to be equal in the eyes of the law. It is a red-letter day in the history of the country. We celebrate it every year with great pomp and show.  This year I happened to be at Delhi on this day. I witnessed the Republic Day celebrations on the lush green lawns near the India Gate. A large number of men, women and children had gathered over- there.
The President arrived at 8 a.m. He was received by the Prime Minister and his colleagues.
The President stood on a raised platform. He unfurled the national flag. After this there was a march past. Smartly dressed jawans of our armed forces marched past the dais and gave a salute to the President. Then there was a display of our latest warplanes, tanks and missiles. Three aeroplanes food appeared in the sky, ejecting lines of smoke in the three different colours of our national flag-saffron, white and green. These planes also showed some breath-taking acrobatic tricks. It was a sight worth-seeing. After this a train of tableaux came, each depicting some aspect of the Indian culture. They showed how rich and unique the Indian culture is. The pageant lasted about two hours.  It was really a memorable sight.
